Waste Minimisation

Waste minimisation is more than a goal—it’s a mindset. From eliminating single-use coffee cups and recycling courier bags into fence posts, to transforming garment offcuts into gloves and diverting obsolete uniforms from landfill, we’re embedding circular thinking into every part of our business. .

These initiatives help us cut emissions, reduce landfill, and support our target of 75% landfill diversion by 2028. Because sustainability starts with smart choices—and we’re making them every day.

What We’re Doing About It

Waste Audit

Reducing landfill is more than a target—it’s a responsibility. That’s why we partnered with Go Well Consulting to conduct a full bin audit at our Auckland head office. This wasn’t just about measuring waste—it was about understanding it. By analysing what we throw away, we’ve identified practical ways to improve our recycling systems, reduce contamination, and engage our team in smarter waste habits.

These insights are helping us build a cleaner, more efficient workplace and move closer to our goal of 75% landfill diversion. It’s a small step with big impact—cutting emissions, lowering costs, and proving that sustainability starts with awareness.

BIN AUDIT REPORT

Brewing Change with Reusable Cups

We’ve taken a bold step to eliminate single-use coffee cups from our offices, customer meetings and events by launching a reusable cup library. This initiative is part of our commitment to reduce landfill waste and reflects our belief that sustainability starts with everyday choices.

Every team member received a reusable cup, and bringing disposables into the office is now considered bad form. The shift has sparked a culture of accountability, extending to off-site meetings and personal habits.

It’s a simple change with lasting impact—reducing waste and inspiring more mindful consumption across our team.

Recycling Courier Bags with Future Post

As part of our commitment to reducing plastic waste, Deane has partnered with Future Post to recycle used courier satchels into durable fence posts for New Zealand’s agricultural sector. In the last financial year alone, we diverted 14.5kg of courier bags from landfill through this initiative. This complements our broader packaging efforts, which saw a 13% reduction in single-use polybags—saving over 3,166kg of plastic. By choosing circular solutions like Future Post, we’re turning waste into long-term value and helping build a cleaner, more sustainable future.

garment offcuts

Turning Offcuts into Opportunity

We’re proud to share an amazing initiative from one of our longest-standing factories—on a circular innovation that transforms garment offcuts into industrial and gardening gloves.

After 18 months of development, their Malaysian factory now diverts 100% of fabric waste from landfill by converting it into yarn and knitting it into new products. This closed-loop solution not only reduces textile waste but supports our goal of 75% landfill diversion across operations.

It’s a powerful example of how ethical manufacturing and environmental responsibility can drive meaningful change.

Garment Recycling That Goes Further

We’ve committed to diverting 100% of our slow-moving and obsolete stock from landfill. Through partnerships with local charities and textile recycling specialists like ImpacTex, we ensure that every unused garment is either reused, repurposed, or recycled into new materials. In the last financial year, we successfully diverted over 5,379kg of textile waste from landfill. This initiative not only reduces greenhouse gas emissions but also supports community organisations and helps us move closer to our goal of 75% landfill diversion by 2028. It’s a practical, purpose-driven approach to responsible uniform disposal.
